Dodgeball captains' guide

We know how much work it is to captain a team, so we want to make it as easy as possible for you to get the job done. This guide will show you the ins and outs.

Rule changes

We clarified 2 existing rules with updated language:

  • Boundaries, updated language — "In games with no boundaries, there are no designated ball retrievers and out players cannot retrieve balls."

    • This means players on the bench can't pass balls to players on the court.

  • Ending the set, updated language — "Teams can choose to play an 'all-in' round at the end of the game where all players join the court. All-ins don't count toward the final score, and should only be played if the round doesn't change the outcome of the game (no all-ins on a tie game). Both teams need to agree to the all-in. During an all-in round, players cannot re-enter the court if there's a catch."

    • This update defines the all-in, ands add clarification about when all-ins can be played.

We discussed adding refs to dodgeball leagues, and we'll be testing that during the spring/summer leagues, with the possibility of introducing that rule change for the fall 2024 leagues.

The first games are Tuesday, Jan. 9 and Wednesday, Jan. 10

The Tuesday league starts Jan. 9, and all games will be played at YWCA at 7:10, 8:10 or 9:10 PM. Please do not enter the gym before 7 PM as another group has a booking before us!

There are 10 regular season games, and the top eight teams will go to the playoffs. Quarterfinals will be on March 19 and the semi-finals and final will be on March 26.

The Wednesday league starts Jan. 10, and all games will be played at Victoria School at 7, 7:30, 8 or 8:30 PM (note that there are a couple of different start times!). There are no games Feb. 21 because the facility is unavailable.

There are 10 regular season games. Semi-finals and the final on March 26 will include the top 4 teams.

Sign the waiver to play

Your teammates must sign the waiver to play! We'll be using the roster registered through the waiver to determine the winning team prize count at the end of the season. Waiver link: https://airtable.com/appcM8F8fqzC4L1aH/shrrg8PpsBfVLewVo

Spirit Awards

If a player on the opposing team shows good sportsmanship during the game, let the coordinator know! When you nominate someone, you get a nomination, too. Individuals or teams with the most nominations at the end of the season will be awarded a Spirit Award prize. You can also nominate players online.
